With limited authority and fiscal and administrative capacities local governments are pressured to find new ways in the operation of the government. The opportunity to rise above the structural constraints can be found by adopting innovative initiatives and implementing new practices that can enhance their capacities in meeting the needs of the citizens.
The research in this volume represents an attempt to understand the nature of local government innovations so that they can be directed to addressing the issues in local, metropolitan and wider regional governances. The issue of governance is essentially about government performance which can be addressed not only by structural reform but also by transforming the governments to adopt innovative measures in their operations and in decision making. An in-depth examination of successful local government innovations demonstrate that much improvements can be achieved through fresh and novel ideas and a sense of commitment to change for the better.
